Focusing on Problems OR Solutions

Image
Case 1: When NASA began the launch of astronauts into space, they found out that the pens wouldn't work at zero gravity (ink won't flow down to the writing surface). To solve this problem, it took them one decade and $12 million. They developed a pen that worked at zero gravity, upside down, underwater, in practically any surface including crystal and in a temperature range from below freezing to over 300 degrees C. And what did the Russians do...?? They used a pencil. Case 2: One of the most memorable case studies on Japanese management was the case of the empty soapbox, which happened in one of Japan's biggest cosmetics companies. The company received a complaint that a consumer had bought a soapbox that was empty. Immediately the authorities isolated the problem to the assembly line, which transported all the packaged boxes of soap to the delivery department. For some reason, one soapbox went through the assembly line empty. Management asked its engineers to solve the ...

Children learn from mistakes only after age 12

Image
LEIDEN : Research in child psychology reveals another peculiar fact lately. If you have an 8 yr old giving you trouble, then this could help you out. While a pat on the shoulder, or a simple ‘well done!’ helps 8-year old kids learn better, a negative feedback like ‘got it wrong this time’ makes 12 yr old children learn from their mistakes, says a new study. The study claims that the learning strategy for both age-groups is quite different. While 8-year old kids learn from positive feedback, it’s the negative feedback that helps 12 yr old children in learning, and the same goes for adults, but a little more efficiently. 12 yr olds are better able to process negative feedback, and use it to learn from their mistakes. Adults do the same, but more effectively. Behavioural research has shown the switch in learning strategy, which shows that 8 yr-olds respond disproportionately and inaccurately to negative feedback.Learning from mistakes is more complex than carrying on in the same way as be...

Mark Twain’s Top 9 Tips for Living

Image
“Let us live so that when we come to die even the undertaker will be sorry.” “When your friends begin to flatter you on how young you look, it’s a sure sign you’re getting old.” You may know Mark Twain for some of his very popular books like Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. He was a writer and also a humorist, satirist and lecturer. Twain is known for his many – and often funny – quotes. Here are a few of my favourite tips from him. 1. Approve of yourself. “A man cannot be comfortable without his own approval.” If you don’t approve of yourself, of your behaviour and actions then you’ll probably walk around most of the day with a sort of uncomfortable feeling. If you, on the other hand, approve of yourself then you tend to become relaxed and gain inner freedom to do more of what you really want. This can, in a related way, be a big obstacle in personal growth. You may have all the right tools to grow in some way but you feel an inner resistance. You can’t...

Indian Traditions ‘Vs’ Scientific Reasons

Image
1) Joining both palms together to greet. In Hindu culture, people greet each other by joining their palms – termed as “Namaskar.” The general reason behind this tradition is that greeting by joining both the palms means respect. However, scientifically speaking, joining both hands ensures joining the tips of all the fingers together; which are denoted to the pressure points of eyes, ears, and mind. Pressing them together is said to activate the pressure points which helps us remember that person for a long time. And, no germs since we don’t make any physical contact! 2) Why do Indian women wear toe rings? Wearing toe rings is not just the significance of married women but there is science behind it. Normally toe rings are worn on the second toe. A particular nerve from the second toe connects the uterus and passes to heart. Wearing toe ring on this finger strengthens the uterus. It will keep it healthy by regulating the blood flow to it and menstrual cycle will be regularized. As Silve...

3 Things to Learn About the Opposite Sex

Image
We are alike in so many ways, but when it comes to relationships and love, there's no denying it:  Men and women can seem to be complete opposites. What might surprise you however is just how many and how real these differences truly are. And yet, you can't ignore these different ways of looking at love if you want to build a successful relationship. 3 Things Men Need to Understand About Women in Relationships  Conflict lingers:  My long-term study on marriage found that women are much more sensitive than men about conflict and problems that arise in relationships. When a woman has a disagreement, it lingers in her mind for two-to-three days. She replays it over and over. She wants to go over the disagreement the next day. By contrast, when men have a conflict with their partner, once it's been discussed, it's resolved. The fight doesn't linger in their minds. They have already moved on to thinking about something else. Don't fix things: Men need to understand...
