Friendship: The Laws of Attraction

Image
The conventional wisdom is that we choose friends because of who they are. But it turns out that we actually love them because of the way they support who we are. When people are asked, "What gives meaning to your life?" friendship figures at the top of the list. Yet the dynamics of friendship have remained mysterious and unquantifiable. Like romantic love, friendships were thought to "just happen." New research shows that the dance of friendship is nuanced—far more complex than commonly thought. With intriguing accuracy, sociologists and psychologists have delineated the forces that attract and bind friends to each other, beginning with the transition from acquaintanceship to friendship. They've traced the patterns of intimacy that emerge between friends and deduced the once ineffable "something" that elevates a friend to the vaunted status of "best." These interactions are minute but profound; they are the dark matter of friendship. Enterin...

I’m not Mad

Drawing is the honesty of the art. There is no possibility of cheating. It is either good or bad. Have no fear of perfection-you’ll never reach it. Mistakes are almost always of a sacred nature. Never try to correct them. On the contrary: rationalize them, understand them thoroughly. The first man to compare the cheeks of a young woman to a rose was a poet; the first to repeat it was an idiot. The difference between false memories and true ones is the same as for jewels: it is always the false ones that look the most real, the most brilliant. At the age of six years I wanted to be a chef. At the age of seven I wanted to be Napoleon. My ambitions have continued to grow at the same rate ever since. Every morning when I awake, the greatest of joys is mine: that of being Salvador Dali. There are some days when I think I’m going to die from an overdose of satisfaction. I do not paint a portrait to look like the subject, rather does the person grow to look like his portrait. Many people ...

18 Things I Wish Someone Told Me When I Was 18

You better be born to do it!  Don’t waste your life fulfilling someone else’s dreams and desires. Commit yourself to making lots of mistakes.  Find hard work you love doing.  Invest time, energy and money in yourself every day.  Explore new ideas and opportunities often. When sharpening your career skills, focus more on less. People are not mind readers.  Tell them what you’re thinking. Make swift decisions and take immediate action. Accept and embrace change.  Don’t worry too much about what other people think about you.  Always be honest with yourself and others.  Talk to lots of people in college and early on in your career. Sit alone in silence for at least ten minutes every day. Ask lots of questions.  Exploit the resources you do have access to.  Live below your means. Be respectful of others and make them feel good. Excel at what you do.  Be who you were born to be.  Above all, laugh when you can, apologize when you shou...

Management Lessons

Lesson Number One: A crow was sitting on a tree, doing nothing all day. A small rabbit saw the crow, and asked him, "Can I also sit like you and do nothing all day long?" The crow answered: "Sure, why not." Therefore, the rabbit sat on the ground below the crow, and rested. All of a sudden, a fox appeared, jumped on the rabbit and ate it. Management Lesson: 1) To be sitting and doing nothing, you must be sitting very, very high up. Lesson Number Two: A turkey was chatting with a bull. "I would love to be able to get to the top of that tree," sighed the turkey, "But I haven't got the energy." "Well, why don't you nibble on some of my droppings?" replied the bull. "They're packed with nutrients." The turkey pecked at a lump of dung and found that it actually gave him enough strength to reach the first branch of the tree. The next day, after eating some more dung, he reached the second branch. Finally, after a f...

T here was once a washer man who had a donkey and a dog. One night when the whole world was sleeping, a thief broke into the house, the washer man was fast asleep but the donkey and the dog were awake. The donkey got worried and said to the dog that if he doesn't bark, the donkey will have to do something himself. The dog did not change his mind and the donkey started braying loudly. Hearing the donkey bray, the thief ran away, the master woke up and started beating the donkey for braying in the middle of the night for no reason. Moral: "One must not engage in duties other than his own" . . . Now take a new look at the same story ... The washer man was a well educated man from a premier management institute. Regular Health Mistakes

Image
All of us make little health mistakes that cause damage to our bodies in the long run - simply because we are unaware we are doing something wrong. Here are some of the most common mistakes made by many of us. Crossing our legs: Do you cross your legs at your knees when sitting? Although we may believe that this is the lady-like elegant way to sit, sitting this way cuts down circulation to your legs. If you don't want varicose veins to mar the beauty of your legs and compromise your health, uncross your legs every time you realize you have one knee on top of the other. The best way to sit is to simply place both legs together on the floor, balancing your weight equally. If you feel like changing position, instead of crossing your legs, simply move both legs together to one side. As an alternative, you could also consider crossing your legs loosely at the ankles. This is a classically elegant way to sit, and is far better for your legs and your health than sitting with your legs c...
